Archipel Des Tuamotu
The "Tuamotus" are a group of 78 islands, all but two being coral atolls. They lie in a NW-SE direction across 15 degrees of longitude (almost 1000 miles). Together with the Marquises and the Society Islands (Tahiti) they form French Polynesia. To enter an atoll, you must sail or motor through a pass, which is a break in the enciricling reef. This entrance must be timed with the tides and wave action outside the pass. High winds and seas can make a pass unuseable. Once inside the lagoon, one must have high sunlight to navigate and avoid the numerous coral heads and shoals. Unfortunately, on my arrival, the winds were 30 knots, seas 8-10' and overcast. If you can't get into the atoll you can't anchor outside as the depths are to great. My only safe choice was to continue. It was disappointing but there will be other atolls...

Change in Plans....
Well, the adventure of Mike Mallory continues... He called tonight and reported that he had a slight change in plans. Due to uncooperative weather and other circumstances, he was unable to get into Tuamotus island.
Sooo, Next Stop...... Tahiti!
Based on his location today, he plans to arrive in Tahiti tomorrow afternoon.
Tough life ...huh?
Once settled, I am sure he will post a much more interesting story. For now...

Can't wait to join him in Tahiti! Fun times ahead.

Traveled 3000nm from Galapagos to Marquesas Islands....

Galapagos is famous for the giant tortoise. They vary in size from 29" in (shell length) & 60lbs to 4' and 700 lbs. |

The trip from Galapagos to the Marquesas was incredible. I had great weather with only one day of showers. I have to give credit to my navigator/weather man.... thanks Stoney.
This information is for my friend Al Hyde.... 3000nm trip-461.25hrs= 6.504kts. Engine used only to charge batteries and refrigeration... 28hrs- 5.5 gal.
I plan to set sail tomorrow, headed to an island called Tuamotus..... about 500nm.

Arrived...... the Marquesas Islands
Mike arrived safely on Saturday. Entire crossing took 19 days, 5 hours, and 14 minutes.
I asked him what he was going to do when he arrived.... he replied, "take a long shower"!
I spoke to him last night and he said he slept great on Saturday night. Finally getting to really rest.
Flyer got pretty dirty too.... so Mike will clean her up today. He said the island is beautiful with high mountains surrounding him. He is ready to go sight seeing and explore the island. Once he gets settled and finds internet.... he will post an update. The internet was not too good in the Galapagos Islands.... but, hopefully he'll have better luck here.

Almost There.....
Just wanted to update everyone....
Mike called yesterday and he is approaching the Marquesas Islands. Based on his pace he should arrive by Saturday afternoon. Everything is going well and he sounds really happy. He still has not seen a thing.... other than birds and water.... lots & lots of water.
Thanks to everyone for a the good thoughts and prayers.
Stay tuned because Mike will update the blog when he arrives in the Marquesas.

Headed to the Marquesas Islands
Mike departed from Galapagos Islands on May 8th heading to Marquesas Islands. He crossed the 1/4 marker on Saturday May 14th.
Said that he has really good winds.... even sailed 155 miles one day. Mike stays in contact with Stoney and me every few days. He expects to arrive around May 30th.
He sounds wonderful and says he is the luckiest guy in the world!
He wanted me to sends his regards to friends and family.
Mike's Last few email/text- to Stoney....
05/14- Greetings frm the Pac Ocean. S 2.45 W 103.08. 151nm ayer, avg 6.2. Pass 1/4 pt. this morn. Wind SE@10 =12.
05/11-Capt. S 2.32 W 98.14. On trk 4 150nm hoy. Staying above 3 deg until W 108 for more fav current. 2455nm 2 go. M
05/02-Noon S00.05 87.29. @ 0842, in a small but imp ceremony, I paid tribute to King Nep 4 my safe passage into the southern ocean. A dram of rum 4 the Capt = a dram into the sea in his honor.

Departed Panama on April 25th
Sailed 7days and 22 hours finally arriving the Galapagos Islands on May 3rd.
I had frequent weather updates from my friend Steve Jackson.
Spent a few days and scouted out the island.... it is beautiful. The Sea Lions are everywhere.... sleeping on the docks and some boats.
I may leave tomorrow and head towards the Marquesas Isalnds. This will be my longest crossing. I will keep in touch and Steve is planning to be the weather man.
One Last thing..... Happy Mothers Day Mom
